📖 About Merchant Madison

Merchant Madison opened its doors in late 2010, the brainchild of Patrick Sweeney and Josh Berkson. Both founders brought deep hospitality backgrounds and a shared passion for craft cocktails and local, seasonal fare.

Occupying a historic building on the edge of Madison’s First Settlement district, Merchant took over the space formerly home to Café Continental—a beloved local institution for over two decades. The building itself dates to the early 20th century and has long served as a gathering spot in downtown Madison.

Merchant began as a hybrid bottle shop and bistro, quickly evolving into a cornerstone of the Capitol Square’s dining and nightlife scene. A major renovation in 2017 modernized the space, expanded dining and bar seating, and introduced its signature industrial-chic aesthetic with exposed brick and reclaimed wood.

Throughout its evolution, Merchant has remained true to its roots—serving up inventive, market-driven American cuisine and pioneering Madison’s craft cocktail renaissance. The restaurant is a proud participant in local events and community fundraisers, and its kitchen and bar are known for collaborating with Wisconsin farmers, cheesemakers, and distilleries.

Today, Merchant stands out as a downtown anchor, beloved for its vibrant atmosphere, creative menu, and the sense of welcome it offers to everyone from Capitol regulars to first-time visitors. Whether you’re here for a late-night bite, a Saturday brunch, or a custom cocktail, Merchant delivers the quintessential Madison experience.
